Noise

THE NOISE ASSESSMENT FOR THE CUSHNIE WIND FARM PROPOSAL COVERS THE ISSUE OF OPERATIONAL NOISE ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES . THERE ARE STRICT GUIDELINES REGARDING THE PERMITTED NOISE LEVELS FOR PROPERTIES NEAR WIND FARMS, WHICH ARE USED TO ENSURE THAT THERE IS NO DETRIMENTAL IMPACT ON LOCAL AMENITY.

Local background noise measurements were recorded at three local properties. These monitoring points were agreed with Aberdeenshire Council’s Environmental Health Officer.

This information is then used with the wind speed and direction data collected simultaneously from the anemometer mast. From the data collected, it is possible to model the potential change in noise levels at surrounding properties and determine whether these are within acceptable thresholds. Aberdeenshire currently imposes stricter noise limits than accepted elsewhere in the UK and the project will be designed to meet these quieter limits.

Highlighted below are the average decibel levels (dB(A)) found in other everyday situations.

Noise levels:
dB(A) Description
140 Threshold of pain
120 Jet take off at 50 m
100 Maximum noise levels on an underground train platform
80 Kerbside of a busy urban street
60 Busy general office
40 Residential area at night
35-45 Wind farm at 350m
20 Background in a TV and recording studio
0
